LOCAL WISDOM AS THE FOUNDATION OF NATIONALISM EDUCATION (Ethnographic Study in the Traditional Villages of Kuta, Pulo and Naga)

Abstract


This study aims to examine the role of local wisdom in shaping nationalism education through ethnographic studies in the Kuta, Pulo, and Naga Traditional Villages in West Java. These three traditional communities maintain noble values such as environmental conservation, respect for ancestors, and attachment to tradition as part of national identity. A qualitative approach with ethnographic methods was used to explore the daily practices of the community in instilling nationalism values informally. The research findings show that Kuta Village emphasizes ecological nationalism through the preservation of forbidden forests and the Hajat Sasih traditional ritual. Pulo Village displays cultural-religious nationalism through local Islamic practices and a lineage-based social system. Meanwhile, Naga Village shows ecological and symbolic nationalism through the rejection of modernization and cultural conservation. Value education is carried out through children's involvement in traditional activities, deliberations, and the role models of community leaders. This study emphasizes that nationalism can not only be taught formally, but also formed contextually through the cultural and social experiences of the community. Local values that develop in traditional communities have the potential to be integrated into the formal education curriculum to strengthen the national character of the younger generation.
